The NGO Akti Project and Research Centre and 52 volunteers collected 100 kg of litter from the seabed of Bania area in Paphos on Saturday. The seabed cleanup was part of the launch of a new Akti project funded by Beyond Plastic Med and was supported by the Australian Embassy in Cyprus.
With more than 3000 billion of microplastic particles, the Mediterranean Sea is the most polluted sea in the world.
The Beyond Plastic Med initiative (BeMed) was funded in 2015 by Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, Tara Expeditions Foundation, Surfrider Foundation Europe and the Mava Foundation to combat plastic pollution in the Mediterranean.
